Historical Information

Adopted 16 August 1960. The map of the island is dark yellow, symbolizing copper which has been mined here since the 3rd millennium BC. Copper takes its name from the Greek name for the island, Kupros, and the crossed olive branches stand for peace between the Greeks and Turks. The white is also a symbol of peace.
